Sounds like tierods to me, but it could be a combination of it all.

That is definitely lean for sure. It could be an intake gasket but I'd hope not. It is really tough to use carb cleaner or anything and find a leak on newer cars. You pretty much need to have access to a smoke machine used for testing EVAP leaks and what not.

But he needs the correct idler anyways, for the cost he might as well get the correct setup with the right idler/belt/etc and sell this stuff and get some of the $$ back. Technically yes he could make it work.
