Of the 34 1965 Shelby GT350R race cars that were built there is one particular example that sets itself apart. Owned by racer Charlie Kemp, chassis 5R538 is the winningest Shelby GT350R in existence, having claimed 32 victories from 1968 to 1970 including one streak of 17 straight wins and 16 lap records. This GT350R is also known as being the fastest 289ci Shelby ever built, topping out at an amazing 184 mph on the banked oval of Daytona Speedway.
Kemp is the current owner today, and is offering the car at RM Auctions’ sale at Amelia Island this week. The GT350R has been fully restored to its race specification and includes the original Shelby Torq-Thrust magnesium wheels. The 289ci V8 has been fully rebuilt and has the original aluminum Cobra intake manifold. Amazingly, despite all the racing, the car has never been in a wreck and still has the original sheet metal.
RM estimates that the car will sell for anywhere between $900,000 to $1,200,000, which could potentially make it the most expensive 1965 Shelby GT350R ever sold and easily in the top Mustangs sold of all time.
