What does the LAW say about rear gas cap?
Anyone know what the New York State law or the federal law says about putting a rear gas cap on a newer (2007 Mustang) car? I understand manufacturers are not allowed to put a gas cap on the rear since the pinto's going nuclear? But what does the law say about retrofitting one to the fake gas cap location? My local custom shop says no can do? I just want to know if this a FACT? I was thinking of putting it in the fake gas cap location that Cervinis still puts on their Shelby tail light set up...Why they did that is beyond me? I hear Mustang Project is thinking about doing it right, without the fake cap? but it is only in development now? Any way the entire reason is the problem ford caused by routing the filler hose to the tank in the first place...what a pain to fill up! so If I'm going to re route the filler hose, I may as well have it where it will look cool also, and easy to get from either side, from the rear. What do you think? :geeza:

I don't know the law but make the following educated guesses:
New York has no law because the area is covered by and preempted by Federal law; there is probably no federal law, but there is likely federal regulations which sets standards which for one reason or an other precludes rear mounted filling and makes it illegal to change or modify it to a rear fill.

As a former owner I think your Pinto theory is incorrect. For one thing the Pinto had the cap on the side in the rear quarter. second the problem was the filler pipe separating from the tank as the tank was pushed in a rear end collision. But that is not all, the gear indicator on the floor operated shift lever could show Park when the shifter mechanism was actually not in Park but sitting on the raised step between Park and Reverse. Leave the car running and it would slip into reverse, back it self up into the nearest object thereby blowing itself up!:smash:


The fix was not one of Ford's "Better Ideas"

I would highly recommend NOT moving the filler location. Cars have crumple zones and deform in more or less known ways and are tested for integrity of the filling system (at least since the Pinto debacle). Seems to me it would be a lot of risk to change it on your own.

i might be a little confused, so even if you did the rear fill up situation, what would you do with the side fill up door ?? unless you plan on shaving that door and filling it and doing all the necessary bodywork, i would just leave it as is.

Yeah, it's a lot of work, but the cool factor would be immeasurable! I don't think having the cap at the end of a rubber hose would have any impact on any crumple zone? If so, I wouldn't feel safe in that car in any event. Yeah, I would shave the old door! what good would it be? Cool comes at a cost, too bad they don't think this stuff out at the factory a little more? really a fake gas cap? with the real one on the side? They would have been better off doing like Saleen did with the pull down plate set up and black out panel, or ccd with just the key hole? This is of course just my 2 cents, and that don't buy much any more!

ccd louvered back panel now, just looking to do better. I want the Cervinis shelby tail lights across the rear, I just don't like the fake gas cap Cervinis makes you re-use. Mustang Project is working on a their version without the fake cap, I'll wait to see that set up before I do anything rash...

I see a couple of problems with this. The gas tank is underneath the rear seats and is made of plastic so you would have to cut a hole in the plastic or polyurethane or whatever it is made out of and stick some sort of hose (you mentioned rubber ) into the gas tank to create the filler neck and then bond it so that there is no seepage of gas fumes into the passenger cabin or little splashes of gas from when you are filling the tank.

Then you are going to have to run a line all the way from the back of the trunk to the rear seat area, of course you could always cut the filler neck at a certain point and attach it that way so you won't have to worry about the issue that I raised previous to this one. But then you are back to the bonding of whatever you make the filler neck hose out of to the plastic neck (which I believe it is). Then at that point you are going to have to create an angle great enough so that when you fill your car up all of the gas reaches the tank and none of it gets left in the filler hose.

Then there is the whole thing where the entire trunk lifts up (including the gas cap emblem) so you are not only going to have to create a hose that has enough length to it that you can open the trunk up fully and reach the tank to the point where it doesn't pull the rest of the hose with it in the gas tank But also reach the tank when the trunk is fully open. Not to mention in order to do this your trunk becomes useless because well there is a big fucking tube right in the middle of your trunk. You could use something similar to the flying wing that refueling tankers use where you have a fixed tube with a hose in the center that can be extended or retracted, but then again how do you retract the hose as you close the trunk to the point where there is no more gas left in the filler tube?

Then there is the whole fueling mechanism that you would somehow have to mount to the trunk so that you can do this and retain the ability refuel your car safely.

And if you are trying to do this because of the cool factor well that is a stupid idea. Unless you hang a big fucking sign on the trunk that says "Hey bro look at my rear fill gas cap no other S197 has one" then no one is even going to notice it nor give it a second thought and if you do no one will really give a fuck anyway, maybe a small percentage of Mustang owners. If you want to go with the cool factor I would go with the idea you previously had which was the Cervini tail lights, Parnelli Jones rear bumper and mold a licence plate frame in between the two lights. Personally the only cars that I have seen pull this off have had the Cervinis tail on them, or were painted to match the color of the car. It is going to cost thousands of dollars to do right IMO and if you are going to do something than you ought to do it the right way. And if spending thousands of dollars just so you can pull up to the gas station and fill up in the rear of your car gets your motor revving well then by all means go for it but I would consider it more of a safety issue more than it being impossible to do.

Who cares who notices, most people wouldn't. But the are certain people who do notice those little tiny differences, and thats when you can tell how much that person loves mustangs.(thats the cool factor).

Did you stop reading after the first sentence of that last paragraph? Yes I did say that I think it was a stupid idea, I tend not to sugar coat things. If you kept on reading you would see that I commented on a previous idea he had that I think is much more unique, would cost less money and would be more of the cool factor that he is looking for. Noticing little details on a car doesn't make anyone less of a Mustang enthusiast than anyone else and saying so IMO is an ignorant thing to say.

Second off my having an opinion on the matter has nothing to do with me being a moderator. When a situation occurs where I have to step in and take action then I will do so with an impartial mind and do what needs to be done even that means I have to take action towards someone I have been friends with for over 3 years. As a moderator I have no friends and have to take action and decide the best course of action.

yes, I read the whole thing. I fail to see where I said anything about not noticing means someone is less of an enthusiast. I think a mod should have chosen words more carefully instead of telling someone it's "stupid" and they may as well hang a "F*cking sign". Now I see why on other Forums NYM and its mods get bashed, maybe those people do have a leg to stand on. But just my .04c though.

Not going to lock this.

As moderators we are allowed our opinion on topics, not just to babysit the forum rules. We get bashed for what reason, being objective to mods, people or just stupididity.

Please feel free to voice your opinion on a certain change or mod of a car, you will not catch shit, so why do you feel it necessary to say that as a moderator we lose that right.
Thank you for your idea of what a moderator can and cannot do.
