It’s been quite a while since a Ford Mustang driver was on the top step the podium at a Formula Drift event. Each of the Mustang drivers, Vaughn Gittin Jr. and Justin Pawlak, claimed podium spots last year, but we have to look back to July of 2012 for the most recent win between the two. Thankfully Gittin has ended the streak this past weekend with a victory at the second round of the 2014 Formula Drift championship at Road Atlanta. It also marked the first time Gittin has won an event since starting his own team and partnering with Nitto Tire.
“Tonight my team and I were truly one. We communicated and worked super hard,” said Vaughn Gittin. “These were some of the most hard fought battles that I remember ever having and it says a lot about our sport, where we are going and what we are doing. And I’m just super proud to be standing on the top step.”
The win puts Gittin in second place in the overall standings, 27.5 points behind Chris Forsberg. Just Pawlak, who was unfortunately knocked out of the quarter finals by Gittin in Atlanta, is near the top of the table as well in fifth place.
The third round of the Formula Drift championship will be at Homestead-Miami Speedway from May 30-31.
