Tranny swap help

I am planning on doing a tranny swap in my dads 95. from manual to auto.

I looked around briefly and came up with some sort of list.

The car at the last dyno was putting down 400+ hp/ 400+ tq and the ignition was cutting off at 4500, so I know there is more in the damn thing.

I am going with a AOD, so I figure I am going to need.

1. tranny
2. driveshaft
3. converter
4. back plate
5. shifter
6. crossmember

Now, I know that the tranny shifts by way of the govenor on the tailshaft, but is kickdown is operated through the throttle peddle by way of a Throttle Valve, or am I wrong.


I want a 4speed with OD, any help would be appreciated. Changing the tranny is no problem, just getting the right parts is what is getting me. I was quoted a price of 6k for a built tranny and all the parts needed from Performance Automatics.

damn, 6k for an aod these days? let me see what I can do for a aod build for ya to handle 600 hp. shouldnt be a problem, does it have to be full auto or is full manual ok?

I called Monster transmissions and they want 2500 for the whole kit. that seems a little more reasonable. But I do have one question..... What the hell is a balloon converter. He said that there is a balloon in the converter and left it at that, beats the hell out of me what that is.

Normally, I would use photoshop to make a witty picture of a balloon mixed with a torque converter, but I'm too lazy. LOL

well im not in the shop now, but off the top of my head 2500$ for everything you need to hold up to 600 or more hp is cutting it close, and the guy must have really been messing with you, you should ask if they fill the ballon with helium for that extra weight savings. Im gonna guess they meant an anti ballooning plate which is usually used for power adder cars or high hp to prevent the expanding or ballooning of the converter.

Ballon converter is just what is sounds like. When a converter spins it expands or ballons. The make converters that don't do that also.

We add specially made anti-balloon plates to the flanged hubs to further reinforce the overall outer strength of your torque converter.
This makes it almost impossible for the torque converter to balloon out and lose the inner dynamic flow.

Greg, Im pulling the AODE out of Nikki's car and putting in a C-4. I will sell you the tranny, convertor, wiring harness and trans computer (I believe they are separate) block plate and driveshaft for $500. The trans has a stage 2 shift kit and hits gears nice. The only trouble I had was shifting at WOT because it was never programmed for the 4.10 gears.
Let me know. It's all still in the car.

hey, what about a e4od in that thing? I have one sitting here that i can build up for ya. an e4od is a c6 with overdrive might take some fitting to get it in but theyre bulletproof so you can drop it in and forget about it. otherwise I will have a price for you on the aod by tonight.
