The WORST sound I've ever heard coming from my Mustang

I just got done finishing my 408 Fox and when idling, with or without the clutch engaged in neutral, there is a horrible metal grinding almost bearing but way worse sound coming from under my car (towards the rear of the engine). It almost sounds like the dust plate that the starter is bolted to is being scrapped by the flywheel or something. When I get going it goes away (or at least you cannot hear it when its driving in gear either engine/exhaust is too loud or it goes away). The metal scraping sound is so loud if you are standing near the car you cannot even hear the exhaust that well (3 inch straight from headers to flow 40s). At first I thought it could have been the driveshaft scraping against the exhaust but since its in neutral or when the clutch is in it makes the noise. I will post a video of it shortly.

Also, I don't think its the engine, which is pretty much brand new (the block is original, but the 408 kit is all brand new). It didn't make this sound on the dyno!!

Any ideas on this one guys? I'm fresh out of them I'm ready to pull the tranny and run it to see if its back there

when turning over it sounds normal, its just once it starts you can hear it. I'm gunna pull the Tranny once I work up the care to. Just put the motor back in twice in the last few weeks to do adjustments so now I'm burned out :(

Never took just a tranny out in a rwd before, how hard is it to line back up when the engine is already in?? (and do I need to drop the driveshaft?)

I had a pressure plate rubbing on the inside of my bell housing once. I sounded like what you described.
Shifter, driveshaft, clutch cable and electrical connections, take out trans to bell bolts, remove cross member, pull out trans, take off starter, remove bell and your done.

If you put the motor in twice and didnt use the clutch allignment peg to allign the clutch disk up you probably screwed your pressure plate and disk up. This is where your noise is coming from...

I used an alignment tool to put the clutch on. If the clutch and pressure plate were not aligned wouldn't the noise go away when the clutch is pressed in or when it isn't pressed at all?

How was your pressure plate rubbing on the bell housing? Did you have the wrong one? I kept all the same drive train that was in it before and it never made this noise.

I'm going to drive it a bit today before taking the trans out. Im gunna leave the bellhousing on and just run it with the pressure plate clutch and flywheel on to see of i can hear where its coming from (going to use the starter to start it)

The corner of the pressure plate contacted the inside of the bell. I was starting to freak out because of the metallic sounds, and then I could not turn the motor over by hand. A little clearancing and everything is fine, simple after pulling the trans three or four times, file a little here, grind a little there. The parts(t-5) was all stuff I sourced from different places for my '79 coupe.

I can turn my motor over by hand though. I took her out for a bit today, taking a video tomorrow and uploading it ill link it to here so you guys can hear it better. Monday my friend is letting my bring it to his garage and use this special tool his shop has that can detect where the sound is exactly coming from its some special drive on machine lookin forward to figuring this out.

Ok let me re-state your idea
1. New motor broken in on engine dyno is perfect made no noise
2. Put drivetrain on now it makes noise
3. Test drove to see if noise went away under certain conditions
4. After going thru the gears I find its hard to go into reverse
5. Now I know to check the piolet bearing
6. If your pockets aren't deep enough to figure out the problem you probably shouldn't own a mustang...sorry

LOL oops I should of read the rest of your post. :smash:Well get a video up so we can hear this. Right now I would say just rip the tranny out check for marking and go from there. Good luck man

LOL I was the :ahole:, Drinking some beer I just scrolled down and started typing im the one usually telling people to READ. I hope you get this figured out soon I hate being stuck on a small project let alone what you got going on.

Ok a have ? Does the noise go away at all when you press the Clutch pedal in?

Things to look at when you pull the trans.

1. throw out bearing.
2. Look at the sleeve of the output shaft that the Throw out bearing slides on to. Make sure it still smooth.
3. Look at the clutch setup, pressure plate Make sure it's not rubbing anywear.
4 Look at the fly wheel. Make sure the counter weight is not hitting the motor. That happen to me

I went to install a Tremec 3550 into my race car Because I blew up my lentech Auto. But the Counter Weight on the Flywheel was hitting the World products Man O war block. I could only turn it so much by hand before the motor would competely stop. I wasn't going to risk tring to start the car and breaking parts. So I ended up not switching the Race car from Auto to stick.

*****UPDATE*****

I have yet to pull the tranny (haven't had time) But I took an awesome video of the noise. The link is below. When I turn the motor over by hand the towards the end of the first part its me turning the motor clock wise then counter clock wise, its as if there is something loose that is clunking in the rear of the motor/tranny. Any input or ideas is greatly appreciated!

I cant tell from that video, but have someone lay under the car with a long screw driver and use that to better isolate the area. Just put the handle end to your ear and the driver end to different points of the tranny. Your gonna have to pull the tranny anyway so get your mind right... Good Luck

FINALLY FIGURED IT OUT!!! Got the time last night to pull the tranny and get a good look. My flywheel outer ring (where the starter grabs) was so loose! I wiggled the ring and it made the EXACT sound as my car did when it was running. Here are some pictures. If you look around the outside there are 3 allen head bolts that can be tightened to clasp down on the outer ring. I did that and its in good place now, but should I change flywheels to a better one so this doesn't happen again?

Definitely use some loctite to keep them from backing out again....nice that it was a cheap fix though, I like finding them but they're rare on my cars. lol
