Rear End swap or gears?

Hey everyone. Just looking for some opinions on what I should do. Last week, I blew out my rear end on my 2000 V6. I took off the diff. cover and there is metal shavings/chunks everywhere. The spider gears are completely broken and chewed up as well as the pinion shaft and the diff. carrier. (pinion and ring look good tho.)
This all happened about 500 feet from my driveway so I pushed it home and AAA won't tow it anywhere because it's at my house already.

My two options:

1) Rebuild existing setup w/some 4.10's and a t-lok for 7.5" rear

2) Find and swap in a GT 8.8 rear end

Just looking for some feedback on which to go with, and were I might be able to find a rear from a GT. The closest junkyard to me has one, but they want $1000 for it, which is WAYYY over priced. My Dad does have a rear from a fox body, but im not sure if/how that would mount up.

I would like to, but I can't afford $1000+. I can rebuild this one w/a t-lok and 4.10's for about 500 not including a tune to account for the gears. anyone know a shop where i could get that done too in the buffalo/niagara area?

This is what I just did a few months back. It was a mess. I went with a new tlok and set of 4.10's.



AAA towed me 130 miles, after the car was sitting at my house. My bro has the full AAA coverage and when I needed to take it to get fixed his wife called and said she was driving it and needed to have it towed to Angola NY. They towed it no prob.
I know of a yard out this way( 2 hours SE of you) that you can get a complete 8.8 out of an 00 for $155. I was going to go that route but decided to just suck it up and buy a new diff.

yeah, im kinda torn. I could go with a complete new rebuild. or get a take off w/who knows how many miles on it, what shape it's in, how long it'll last. Cuz if it's off a G.T. from someone who liked to hammer on it, I'd Prolly be better off w/the rebuild, right?

Ok, So i just ordered the 4.10's and t-lok, Bearing set, and some royal purple. gotta go grab a couple of other tools and hopefully she'll be back up and running by next week sometime.

I got it all from AmericanMuscle.com. Their prices were pretty comprable to everywhere else, but the discount from here was def a deal maker. And yeah, I think im going to do the install myself. I don't think it'll be that hard as long as I take my time with it.
How you liking your 4.10's? My dad was trying to convince me to go 3.73 cuz someone told him sixxers don't have the balls to move a set of 4.10's.
I cant wait for the t-lok too. No more peg-leg.

not sure. i think they'll be alright. I've read up on it and alot of people say that the loss in MPG isn't super significant. I've got a couple of other mods in the works that may help reclaim what I lose

I drove a stang with 4.10's and I thought it was to much. You run high rpms down the highway and it does kill the gas. If you think, it just spins your motor faster and your rearend slower. there is a good power difference for you sixers. I have a set of 3.73's and that was a good step up for me from a set of stock. I can still roll the highway with decent millage and its a good power improvment. jc2Kv6Black, tell your father the car strains more trying to spin 3.73's. Maybe he just had them mixed up in his mind.

4.10 too much? what? that makes it easier to get up and go.....

I did alot of digging before I made my decision. There were a few places that recomended the 3.73's for a stick. But most of em said 4.10's for an Auto. Idk. If I don't like em, at least I'll know how to swap em out again. Lol

that's cool, they don't mind the mpg loss? I guess with other mods that increase mpg you can balance it out.

jc2Kv6Black, are you going to run AmericanMuscles tune for it?

Yeah idk what or how Im gonna tune it. I'm not super concerned about the speedo. being off cuz my gps functions as one. Although it will read as more miles on the car. I was also gonna take it to p&j's speedshop over here in Tonawanda. But idk. Should I go with what they use or get a diablpsport or sct and do it myself? I don't really have another $400 for a tuner...

If its an automatic its important to get it tuned cause your changing your shift points, you can actually cause some damage if you don't. In order for any speedshop to tune your car your going to need your own tuner. If you get one from p&js I'd recommend getting a diablo

Yeah. I was wondering about the shifting too. I was considering maybe getting a shift kit too. P&J's sells both tuners I believe. Thanks for the advice.

truth! 4.10 for auto, 3.73 stick. unless you go turbo, or eaton.

only lose 3-4mpg highway normally. same as before gears twn.

buy a Xcal3 from www.vmptuning.com , theyll set up a custom tune for your car
