popular q's about speedo!

ok i searched but can't seem to come up with the answer that i'm looking for...but all well here is my question.

i have a 91 gt with 306ci and 3.73 gears and for some reason the soeedo hits between 55 and 60 and rockets around to 140 and will not get back under control until i bring the car back down to around 15-20mph.
honestly i haven't attempted to even take anything apart yet i've got a few opinions but it never hurts to get plenty of different views on the situation. i just need to know what to order...it's colder than balls here in ny and i don't feel
like laying on the ground till i have what i need. thanks and look forward to the bashing cuz i'm sure this has been answered in the last 19 years! haha:rock:

Well replacing the speedo gear will correct the speedo being off roughly 10mph but I have never herd of it shooting way up like that and not correcting itself until you slow way down..


I would start with the speedo gear.

What speedo gear do you have in it? Usually that will only make the speed off though. Maybe the cable is no good? Start small and work your way up to more expensive things. lol Good luck dude.

i'm using the stock speedo gear as of right now but want to do the right thing cuz i want to be able to drive my car whenever...but i have a hard enough time with the cops eyeballin' me as it is. plus after this year my record will be clean.
don't want to blemish that!

you know? the more i think about it you don't think i should check into the cluster do you? i just can't imagine what would cause the speedo to snap to 140,,,thanks so far

Ahh, I don't think its the cluster.. Its not a complex system.. Its got to be the gear and the speedo cable or a combo of both..

haha so i replaced the cable and the gear, turns out neither was bad or wrong but replaced them anyway cuz of age, actually what was causing the speedo to snap to 140 was the "cable retainer clip thingy" that keeps the cable in the electric sensor was gone and when my speed reached over 50 it would push out or something i don't know how but i fixed that with the new cable and gear and all is well. thanks for all the help everyone!
