ny inspection and exhaust

Hi,
Do you have an inspection shop that you use currently? I ask because I'm sure you could ask them specifically what is legal and what isn't . Also some shops,Like one I use(I'm not naming names.lol) Don't go over the older stuff with a fine toothed comb,meaning I could just about get a car with opened headers passed . Alot of times it boils down to how lax a shop is.When I did inspections we were pretty forgiving in terms of exhaust systems.
For 1965 you might be pretty safe,look at the stock exhaust on a 1965 Shelby Mustang ,It was straight pipes into glasspacks and dumped out the sides in front of the back tires.
I'd say ask the DMV, But they'd probably make you put cats and a single exhaust on it.

Thanks for link and the responses that helps at least with the letter of the law. I am curious from those like you Pony if glasspacks and side pipes would be the norm to let through at most shops. I see they don't test for emissions thanks to the link but from a crazy decibel standpoint it doesn't say anything in there so I assume you can try it?
Not trying to start an argument, but 95 thru 86 (as of this year) get a low enhanced emissions inspection. Basically a visual check of all emission controls that the vehicle came equipped with from the factory. If a vehicle came equiped with cats or an air pump and they are no longer present, the vehicle should fail the emissions portion of the inspection.
And as far as the vehicle being equiped with mufflers, they are not checked during the inspection, so technically, a vehicle does not need them to pass inspection. You do need adequate exhaust though under the VTL.
