Many of our customers have engines and/or tunes that require premium 93 octane fuel . Since premium fuel is currently unavailable in many locations we recommend that you take the following steps when running the regular gas that is available now.
1) The key to running your performance car safely on regular fuel is to avoid detonation (pinging) at all cost. That means keeping the engine lightly loaded, with no full throttle or heavy throttle use. Your car will still be able to be driven with regular fuel to get you to work, or the store or school etc., but you should avoid any heavy load on the engine. In short, drive as if your sick grandmother is in the car with you and you won’t have any problem.
2) To keep your engine safer with regular gasoline we recommend you make the following changes:
A) If you have a regular or 87-89 octane fuel tune on your SCT Xcal tuner load that into the car until you can get premium fuel again.
B) If you don’t have an 87 octane tune to load into the car, we recommend you adjust the optional parameters on the premium fuel tune and reload it into the car as follows:
Naturally aspirated (no supercharger): Set GLOBAL SPARK to -3. Set WOT SPARK @2000-4000 and 4000-8000 RPM to -2. Set WOT FUEL to +2 (richer)
Centrifugal Supercharged (Vortech, Paxton Procharger): Set GLOBAL SPARK to -3. Set WOT SPARK @2000-4000 to -3 and 4000-8000 RPM to -4. Set WOT FUEL to +4 (richer)
Positive displacement Supercharged (Kenne Bell, Whipple, roots, TVS) and Turbocharged: Set GLOBAL SPARK to -4. Set WOT SPARK @2000-4000and 4000-8000 RPM to -4. Set WOT FUEL to +4 (richer)
3) After making the recommended tune changes, NA and Centrifugal supercharged (Vortech, Prochager) cars can be driven normally except FULL THROTTLE SHOULD BE AVOIDED. Kenne-Bell and Whipple supercharged cars should be driven very carefully. Even at low rpm these cars go into boost. It is recommended to drive with a very light pedal application and extend the rpm a few hundred rpm HIGHER than normal before shifting to the next gear, as opposed to lugging the car at low rpm where it will go into boost.
Cars with computer chips or without user adjustable options on their SCT tuner should call should call Realspeed for individual recommendations at 631-563-7325.
