whats up guys and girls. some of you may know my car, most probably dont. I own a '71 mustang coupe. since the last time i was on here, the cars been threw alot. it got rear ended and i packed it up and put it in storage for the winter at my buddies place upstate. the salt on the roads killed the appearance of the car, surface rust spots starting showing up everywhere, all over the chrome came threw the old paint, and the motor was disgusting. when i finally decided it was time to bring it down, i was surprised when it started right up after sitting for the last 6 months, carb wasnt gunked up or anything.
I started driving it around again, decided it needed more. So over the next month, i pulled out the motor and trans and replaced both. Me and my buddies re-built up a 302 roller motor out of a 90 mustang. My buddy was running it in his Fairmont for a while, so we knew it was pretty much good to go. We swapped out the cam and intake, as well as the carb that he was running for bigger and better parts and put it all back to spec. The old trans was tossed to the side and replaced with a c-4 with a 3500 stall converter, deep pan, red band clutches, hardened pumps, and a full manual reverse valve body topped off with a hurst pro-stick.
I then decided it was time for the cars appearance to change. The rear suspension was lowered down to stock height, then i found some ford steel wheels with the correct backspacing and mounted them on a set of 295s. they fit under the car perfectly, no rubbing or anything, even had a bit of room to spare. We then lowered the front of the car about 4 inched from factory. I put on a pair of original Cragar 15x3 inch skinnies on 165/80 tires. I used an old 70 challenger gas cap to replace the original that broke in the crash, as well as the rear bumper and valance. I still need to swap out the gas tank and tail panel, but they work for the time being.
Interior didnt change too much, I took out the vintage suntach and smaller sunpro gauges and replaced them with an autometer monster tach and 2 5/8 oil, volts, and water gauges. To get the new shifter to look like it belonged, i re-made the original shifter bezel using fiberglass, and cut it to the shape of the shifter area. A new radio and speakers topped the interior off.
Next up is the rear, time to find a 9 inch rear, throw in some 4:10s, and bolt on some caltracs and monoleafs. Followed by a full exhaust, and eventually getting some cragars with the right backspacing to match the fronts.
If you havnt fell asleep reading this yet, hope you like my ride, here are some pics, there are many more in the album section. Let me know what you think!
