there's a cam in the car so it ain't running like it should...

Even with MAF a cammed stock headed 5.0 is not going to run like it should. It's going to be lacking the low end, and when it wants to rev the stock heads are out of breathe anyways. So you end up with a SUPER narrow band of power.

Ya, I hear ya. I nice Explorer motor with a stock HO cam in it or TFS Stage 1 would be nice later on..

Or some GT40P heads on that motor...

yup it definitely was. with the car at 10* it wouldn't get out of its own way...

It just started feeling normal at about 12-13*

So the cam in this car is retarded? I would advance it 2* or so with 14* base timing(as long as it doesnt ping. Some 5.0's like 12, some like 14). Would really wake the car up!
