Long tubes installed

After 3 weeks or so and very little time to work on the car I finally got the BBK long tubes, O/R X pipe and cat back done last night. Some of you know that the BBK long tubes don't fit a car with an AOD, well these do now. They hit everything. A/C lines, K frame, trans pan, trans linkage, starter and the air tube didn't fit after they were installed. Both of the O2 sensors bungs had to be relocated as well. A little cutting, bending, welding and drinking got them in there with little room to spare. I had to cut the origional 4 into 1 collector off the driver side and use a less bulky 4 into 1 weld on collector from hooker. Only issue now is because the driver side had to go so low to miss the shift linkage, it is a little close the the ground. Not really bad but it could be better. Only thing left to do is take it all back off again, clean it up and coat the welds. I will get a vid tonight if it's not raining. It wasn't that bad to do but kind of pointless when none of it will be able to be used with the next motor come next spring.

With all that work, it was still probably easier to install than fbody ones :p
Why did you choose to fit the BBK and not get other tubes? got them for cheap?

The fbody headers I did were cake compared to these. You have to pick the motor up as high as you can get it just to get these into place. I used these because I didn't know they wouldn't fit am auto and the guy I ordered them from obviously didn't either. By the time I figured it out, it was too late. Live and learn. I can't believe the improvement they made. I have never had a car that responded so well to simple bolt ons.

That's what makes the 5 ohs so desirable. :D They respond good to bolt ons and are cheaper to build, ford engines wise. Glad to see you were able to still use them, I definitely would have been pissed that they didn't fit.

now think about what a s/c or a turbo can do ....not that i have eather but some day ...:D

I hear ya on the S/C or turbo. This 5.0 is done. I have other plans for a bit more displacement. Only thing I would think of doing to this one would be to load it up with Nitrous and listen to it pop.

my long tubes from hedman were a pain had to have them all cut up into pieces i bought some cheap summit brand long tubes previously n went right in with just a mini starter. . but you definately feel the difference in the headers its well worth it . .good job

Whoa, that sounds like a lot of work! I just swapped my POS long tubes for BBK- LT'S (351W/C4, Dart Pro 1 heads) in a 82 Capri. Lifted engine a little, slipped right in from below, dropped back down on a 1/4" spacer on the driver side motor mnt to clear the steering shaft. The headers were used & had already been slightly "massaged" to clear the rag. Couldn't believe how easy they went in & how much extra room there is along the sides now. Ya there's a mini starter, but I think a stocker should fit. :burnout:

right now i got o/r bbk with flowmaster. i want to buy a set of l/t's with an x to match but i cant do the work myself and dont know anyone in the area to do it for a reasonable price. anybody in the albany area wanna make some money? lol

If you want LT's go with the MAC. They make them to fit an AOD car. I have read good and bad about the fit and quality but from what I see the quality of the BBK's isn't as hot as I would have expected either. What would you expect from a $300 set of headers though.

They may not last forever, BUT I would expect them to fit!!!!!!!! :)

100% correct. For the most part the fitment issues with mine were due to the Automatic trans. However, they still hit the k-frame, steering shaft and A/C lines. None of that stuff is changed from an auto to a standard. And they were only 1 5/8" primaries. It seams that Kooks, or other good header manufacturer, can make them with a 1 3/4", 1 7/8" and 2" primaries and don't have fitment issues. The materials and overall finish of the BBK are poor as well. Welds arn't as good as they could be and the chrome is some of the worst I have seen. They even chrome right over the weld spatter. These were the first and last products I will ever buy brom BBK.

Think they're (BBK) "made in China" ? lol & yes, it's hard to beat Kooks.

Yeah from what I've heard they do. I need some for mine desperately!! I have to tighten them just about every damn week because I keep getting the pos sound of the header tick, the bolts that came with the headers, require the hex keys and you can't tighten them down very well. The passenger side bolt all the way back on the firewall is the hardest to get to because I still have the smog stuff on it...
