Just got a 351w from a 73 granturino. need much advice.

Ok so its obviously not a mustang 351w. On the other hand its still a 351w. and does that still stand for windsor? I have a friends dad who has gotten a 1973 gran turino 351w engine. i have some basic questions and some other more complex questions about it. Ok to start. Will this fit in a 94 or 95 5.0 mustang? I was told it will seeming the 302 and 351 blocks are the same. I'm also pretty sure I'd have to get like a cobra hood to fit the air cleaner. And would this be a hard swap if i get a 5.0 with a bad engine and go to a carb'd 351? Just not sure how hard it would be to get everything to work right with out having a comp. like i dont want dash lights on all the time. NOW I've got the "more complex" questions. does anyone have any advice or a list of stuff that would get this 351 into the 300-350hp range? I'm semi on a budget but eh what ever. His father told me when we get done with it this spring he thinks he can get about 275hp out of it. but I really want to hit the 350hp range. I mean a 5.8 shouldnt make only 50hp more than a 5.0 in my world. SO any advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks

If your going to only look to make 350 max out of a 351 based motor, why waste the time and do the swap at all? I would just stick with the 5.0 motor.....

Hey,It sounds like you have an interesting dilemna. First off do you know for sure what year,and exact motor it is? If it is in fact a 351W The windsor does stand for Windsor.Keep in mind Ford also made 351's called Clevelands,which in to the 70's Became 400's and 351M's . That said ask any car guy and they will tell you 70's cars weren't exactly tearing up the street in stock trim thanks to Smog laws. Bottom line I wouldn't bother and if you did you are really just looking at the Short block because if the Heads are stock,They are going to be undesireable Smog pieces. To discuss The short Block it will be a non roller block,granted the earlier bloocks are considered stronger than the later model versions. As tempting as it may sound,I think you're taking a step backwards. That's my 2 cents.

this is why I'm asking around. I know its a basic smog piece right now, but im trying to get out of that. I mean what do you guys feel would be a good amount of power for a 351 based engine but with in a resonable range? He did get two engines. one on the tag said 351W and maybe followed by a c? which worried me but i wasnt sure seeming i knew i was looking for one or the other, not both. and the other one was a 73 400m. i dont think that would fit though. what would you feel would make this worth it if it is a W? i mean i want something nice and strong for a good base to build up on. i was thinking 400hp but figured that'd be a long shot. He also told me that he was going to get new pistons and a new cam for it along with some other things. obviously I'm trying to make this better than it is. I like the idea of a rebuilt engine that no one else has beaten up for me to get. i had that happen with my 95 3.8L. I just found out that i have a bad rod or main bearing possibley. and i replaced the engine in it because when i got it, it had a bad wrist pin.

It could be either, the 351C was still used and was the higher performing motor with a 4 barrel. The 351W was 2 barrel only in the Torino. The look ALOT different. Just google 351w vs 351c

ok the engine from my investigating is a 73 windsor. what would be the best sugestions on things to do to get 400hp? with a budget of say like $600-$1000? also one thing i wanted to do was go with a roller lifters, but his dad sugested solid. any ideas and or set ups? we're planning on basically reversing everything they did that dumbed them down in the 70's. basically going off the idea of a 69 mustang 351. so any ideas on where to get like new pistons, what would be a good cam to run, and etc.

Thats a TIGHT budget for 400hp. Does it NEED a rebuild? I can't remember what the chamber size is on the stock heads that year but for cheap.

GT40 or GT40P heads
Edelbrock RPM or Weiand Stealth
Mild cam, maybe a Comp XE268

Now you could get your heads rebuilt, they have the same valve size as the GT40 IIRC but the compression is going to be higher with the GT40 or GT40P plus they have the smaller plugs and hardened seats.

so all in all. will this fit in a 94-95 5.0? and will it hook up to the drivetrain, to the T-5? just need to know that stuff aswell. will there be anything else that needs to be changed for it? and is it hard to go from ecu-carb'd?

Hey man I've been reading through this and my 1st thought is to say save up your money to do t right. keep driving the 5.0 until you can get all the things you want. $1000 will not get you 400hp on a stock 351W unless you get most of the parts for next to nothing. Also, the engine will fit in a SN-95 but you will need swap headers, a mustang oil pan for a 351W, a new 28oz flywheel to work with your T-5 and you will have to play with your accesories to use them on a taller deck of a 351W. I would also recommend selling the 351 and using the $ you have towards a set of Trick Flow Twisted Wedge heads and a custom grind cam to maximize the 302 you have now. You will be surprized at the results. You can pick up used T/W heads cheap. My brother just bought a set of CNC ported ones with raised intake ports and 2.05/1.60 valves with a matching intake for $800 shipped. Just some advice.
