The Ford Mustang had one of its most successful outings in the SCCA Pirelli World Challenge in the last few years with a strong contingent of Mustang drivers finishing in the top ten.
Tony Buffomante of Capaldi Racing led the way with a second place finish, his highest in the series. “That start was pretty hairy!” said Buffomante, who qualified fourth in class. “I thought going in, ‘There isn’t much room here for the standing start.’ But Nic and I went wheel to wheel, and we really enjoyed a super clean race. I couldn’t quite track him down and I held off Roush in another Boss 302 behind me. It’s a dream start for us and the Ford family.”
Jack Roush Jr. also had a strong showing in only his second race in the series. After capturing pole position on Saturday he crossed the line in fourth place at the end of Sunday’s race. He was followed by Alec Udell’s Ford Mustang of Watson Racing in fifth, and Brad Adams finished inside the top ten in ninth position.
Another Mustang driver, Erik Davis, took home the Optima Batteries Best Standing Start award after gaining nine spots from the start in his Always Evolving Racing/Autotopia Ford Mustang Boss 302S. Davis ended 13th in class.
The strong finish by the Mustang drivers has put Ford in the lead in the manufacturers’ standings, with Buffomante second in the drivers’ standings and Roush Jr. in fourth. The next event is at Barber Motorsports Park from April 25-27.
