Started when I bought a 1986 Chevy Camaro Iroc-Z28 with a 305 TPI - it had T-Tops and only had 69,000 original miles, got it when I was 16 years old... Very first car and my Uncle has been a long time home mechanic so he helped me with everything... Went through the whole car and restored every single thing I could including all the interior, engine, etc..
Some guy bought it on Craig's List for 7500 and that's when I got the Mustang and started doing the modding myself..... from there on out it's all about the manuals but not aftermarket I'll only follow the actual FORD shop technician manuals...and all the stuff my Uncle taught me...!!

Well I had auto shop in school for a year before they shit canned the class. But otherwise I learned myself by reading and trial and error. I still do it this way today. When I was 20 and got my first mustang. I wasn't making a lot of money. So I had to figure out way to make it go fast cheap. I was always tinkering with my car. Then I wrecked my first mustang and bought a 4cly mustang for $200. I started to swap everything over from one car to the other. It took me almost a year to stirp down 2 cars and put 1 back together. I only had weekends and what ever spare time to do the car. Because of school, work and GF at the time. But that is how I learned. And I didn't have a computer back then to go online and figure shit out. I only had my head and a book at times.
The input has been great, I guess, I'll start with a Haynes manual for the S197, continue to DVR the Power Block, and the HS I teach at has an auto program, maybe I'll sit in on some classes and talk to the teachers and learn from them. When this 2nd Master's is finished I might just go to mechanic school to learn how to do this stuff. Keep the replies coming.
first motor i ever rebuilt was one of these when i was around 8 or 9 under the watch of my dad
moved on to this when i was 11. we were a couple of kids tear assin around the streets of nyc on rebuilt POS dirtbikes. if we got caught, we basically gave up the bike and walked home.
i then moved onto my first 4 stroke at 15. once you get over the fear of the timing chain and cam, youre good to go.
and then i started on 5.0 liters. i will get pics of the cars one day

he graduated university as a mechanical engineer, but doesn't know shit about cars, and would always argue with me on something that i know for sure. for example he still thinks that intake manifold is the injector(yeah he's back in carburetor times) and the actual injectors don't serve any purpose on a car.
the farthest i even went down an engine was when i changed a valve cover gasket on a BMW.
