I found two explorer engines that I'm thinking of buying. One has the gt40 manifold and heads and is $500. Another one has gt40p heads and cobra manifold and is $600 and further away. Would any of these be good investments and which one would be better?
Too much money if its just the engines, a bit cheaper would make them a good bargin. If thats the price for the whole truck then I might consider it cause you can take the parts and scrap the rest and recoup some of the cost.
I figures that it was a good deal seeing that the manifolds sell for about at least $200 and I thought the heads would be about that price too but what do I know lol thanks for the help

The only reason I say that is Ive been able to get those motors out a bone yard for around 400 complete. So call around and see what the yards are offering. Most yards don't know what makes them special, to them its just another 5.0. Also with stripped down parts you paying for labor too. I pull the engine apart I'm going to include a charge for my time to take it apart. That why a intake cost 200 separate you get a better deal buying the whole motor out a yard.
I would not pay $600 personally, maybe if it was a super low mile motor. They are a good budget motor though, alot of guys running fast with just a cam change, or cam and valve springs.
I was asking for the manifold and heads from a explorer 5.0 and i told him that it was from 1996 to like 1998. He was like no i need the actual production date b/c each one is different and it might not fit and I don't want you keep coming back if they don't fit. Will they all fit on my motor?

Guy doesn't know what he is talking about lol. Alot of the junkyards just go by the interchange guide which is not the bible obviously. ANY Explorer 5.0 will work. You are better off getting a whole motor vs. just heads/intake.
yes. just get the whole motor. it is a big process for a junkyard to take off an intake and heads compared to a motor. and then you have a spare shortblock as well
There are guys with Explorer motors running in the low 12's with nothing other than a stock HO camshaft swapped in them, and of course exhaust-gears-etc. Like said above, the plug angle is straighter, some headers fit ok with 90 degree boots others do not. FRPP makes direct fit headers, as does MAC. I know that MAC long tubes should fit. Do a google search on GT40P headers you will find alot.
Yea I know about the different headers you need but I was just wondering if there was really a big difference in performance between the gt40 and gt40p heads and also the gt40 intake vs the cobra intake.

The GT40P actually flow more even with the smaller exhaust valve vs. the original GT40 heads. They have revised port design and combustion chambers that are more efficient.
Cobra intake vs. Explorer, very close and if you want a cheap sleep intake get the Explorer one. Only thng is that the IAT is not located in the lower so you will need to drill and tap or relocate the IAT.
