Sup All,
I got a great deal on a set of Brembo GT500 brakes from "Boosting Wild", i was not sure if ther brakes will clear my wheels but for the price i figured i would give it a shot and if they dint fit,. i would just sell them for what i got them for. When i came to pick up the brakes Boosting Wild offered to test fit them b4 he sold them to me as he would feel bad if they did not fit, sure enough to my doubts they fit!! Thanks again Boostin, super kool and knowladgable d00d.
I was planning on installing it myself but my buddy got sick, so i just took it to my shop. The install was very straight forward, a TRUE direct fit, the only part that was difficult was the bleeding procedure, it requires 2 people. It could be done at home but Jack stands are needed as bleeding both brakes requires easy access to both side of the car. I was outa the shop in 45 min, coulda been done in an hour with hand tools and jack stands.
When comparing the rotors side to side the difference is HUGE, 12" rotor compared to a 14" rotor but the biggest suprise was the caliper, Brembo's 4 piston caliper is MUCH taller, wider and longer than the stock 2 piston but the shocker was the weight, the Aluminum Brembo caliper is lighter than the Stocker!!! The kit also comes with better lines and a dust shield to keep dust and water off of the rotor as it causes warpage when hitting hot discs. The rotors are semi hollow inside, there several tiny posts supporting the surfaces and allows for better venting, the 14" rotor is lighter than the stocker as well!
You really dont feel a difference with the GT500 brakes until you SLAM on the brakes, the difference is incredible, the stopping power is insane, they allow you to go into a turn really hot and slam the brakes right before it without throwing the cars balance off. I took a few buddys out for a ride and they was shocked, turns that were impossible to brake in time for now seemed totally do able. My good friend (only person i trust with my Stang) took the car out for a spin to confirm that its not just me drooling over a new mod.
To truly test this mod i went Autocross racing yesterday, my first run out, the fastest lap was 65 seconds, after getting used to the brakes and a few more heats i was able to knock my times down to the 58's, that is a huge time shaving and a lot of it was die to the added confidence you have going into turns as HOT as you can knowing the brakes will decelerate in time. Theres an old d00d who always comes to the races in an 86 IROC z, i always use him as a bench mark as he is a great experienced driver with a similair car and street tires, i never come within 10 seconds of the guy, yesterday i got within 4 seconds of him, his best time was a 54 with the best time of the day run by a C6 on race tires @ 48 sec!!!!
I recomned this mod to anyone who is adding more power to their Stangs, especially S197's due to their weight, theres tons of Brembo GT500 kits out there for a reasonable cost. I wish a had the dought to shell out for a 6 piston 2 piece rotor set up, i can only imagine the stopping power they would deliver.
To give you guys an idea of the difference in brakes visually, i made a lil comparison picture, check it out.
