429 worth it?

This is my first domestic build, coming from a lot of imports. A close friend of mine found a deal on a 429 and since he owes me some money. Want to know if I want it.

It's a 429 block out of a 1971 LTD station wagon, The cylinders are bored .10 over. heads, valves, springs, and main caps. No rotating assembly.

The cost seems low, but i honestly know little to nothing. this would prob be something i build and try to get in mid summer or wait till next summer.

If anyone could give me an idea of a setup or or anything info would be great.

Depends on what you're putting it in. You can get big power from a 429 if it is done right. It is a 385 series block 429/460. If you plan on putting it into a fox body, you have a bunch of options. I'm planning on a qa1 k member to make things easier, but it is possible to drop it into a stock framed car. Big thing is, do your home work. Stroke it out to 530 ci, bolt on some scj heads, a good cam, and your looking at 600+ reliable hp 590 ft. lbs. of torque that is streetable on pump gas. If you don't plan on going big, then 450 plus hp. on mild build, with iron heads is possible.

I owned a 429 scj back in the early 80's the only thing that could beat me in the qtr.mile in this area was the 1100 bikes and just by a half a bike length.Run 11.70's with 4.11 rear gears.They run better with the smaller port heads off 460 or 429,the scj heads were better for Nascar application.you will gain around 50 horse with the smaller port heads,but you should grind out the polution nubs in there and polish them to a mirror finish.They have to be 4 barrel heads.The seat of the pants test over the scj heads was incredible.I had a 850 double pumper Holley with all 4 barrels all the time,Crane cam,540 lift,302 durration,and a set of 3 inch Hooker headers,Cloyes roller timing chain,and some other goodies.She would realy scream.
