2012 Mustang Rally Finger Lakes

I'm definitely game for coming out another day early. Not sure about Sunday though. It was nice to get home and have all day Sunday to catch up. I suppose I could always take that Monday off. Plus its another $150+ for a Saturday night. I'm flexible either way, if people really want to stay until Sunday.
I don't know if I'd make reservations this early either. Its not clear from Dan's post above if we look into renting the track for a day, if it will be the weekend of the Sauerkraut Festival. :idk: He said getting a date would be some work.

It will take quite a bit of money to do a track rental if all we get is 30 cars, it would be a lot of fun though. Seeing that the Porsche Club had the track the last two years on that weekend it's a pretty good bet that it would have to be a different weekend. I would like to go out another day, but it was nice to be home for Sunday, although I really didn't feel like driving home on Saturday.
If everyone wants to stay another day? Anything different you woud like to see for Sunday? Wish we could get that burnout contest...
It will be difficult to Top having Molly Saleen at next years show.. lol! With Shelby gone and Steve kinda becoming the center sorta speak.
What I didn't say in my previous post. Edsel Ford was one of investors seeking to build a track on Staten Island.. Oh yeah at a cost of $250,000,000!
My logic behind this... If enough support is shown to Watkins Glen International Raceway... The money will be there. This isn't that difficult to achieve. Especially with some sponsors in the mix.
The date might be difficult. Someone said Saturday in Watkins. If we did that the parade in Phelps would be out. Which I think most everyone likes?

I believe there was some thought about staying another day so we didn't have to go home on the same day of the show. I know last Saturday, it was so hot and I wanted to get a shower and relax afterwards but it was time to get back in the car and head home.
The burnout contest would be fun, but I don't think some of us would do that. I probably wouldn't unless I had a set of tires to burn off.
I don't mean to sound like I'm shooting everything down, but those are just my opinions. I really thought there would be more cars than that for the show, I thought around 150.. I see I was way off. It's a really great time and there was a lot of promotion, and we still didn't get the numbers. For some reason I still saw a few mustangs drive by during the show, how can you miss the big signs?? Even a few people on here claim to have never seen anything about the show/parade/Glen...

We also wanted to add another day before the event (Wednesday) so we could do a wine tour and/or boat ride. Then the Sunday idea was added so we wouldn't have to drive home. I think I had the farthest to drive and I really didn't mind it. But like I said, if everyone wants to stay until Sunday, I'll just take Monday off.
I like the idea of the track rental. People were saying a couple laps wasn't enough. You may draw more people if it is a full day rental. Some people drive several hours to come out and it would make it more worth the drive. There are other events that do the 3 laps like opening day, renting for a full day will set this event apart. I like the idea of a Friday rental with a Saturday show. It leaves the option for a Sunday rain date. Friday should be considered a weekday too vs. a weekend and therefore cheaper? I also don't think we need the competition racing, this is for fun. Maybe down the road you could upgrade to that. If this means moving away from the festival, maybe there is another town event that can be setup in its place? Would people come out just to see a Mustang parade?
As to Josh's point about the amount of cars. Getting a late start on promoting the show may have hurt us. I know a lot of people I talked to happened to be out of town that weekend. I also kept putting it in my status updates. There were about 5 threads about it and Mike even put up a special logo. I mentioned it to people at every show/cruise-in I went to. I also PM'ed a lot of people.

Wow its good to hear all this planning going on. So here's my 2 cents. First of all the track day. What a dream come true. But as Dawn said it will have to be a fun run. Most people are running street tires and street brakes. this is something all participants will need to consider.
Second, as cool as a burn out contest sounds it means a set of tires to sacrifice and a lot of melted rub to clean out of the wheel wells.
Between the two the track day sounds great but i agree that we need more cars and maybe we could break them down into classes like the GT racing. i.e. supercharged, turbocharged V8 V6, 4 banger. again just a thought.
Thirdly, maybe we need to involve other mustang forums and groups, MOM'S Foureyedpride, and others to get the numbers up for a track day. OR do any of them have something like this that we can piggyback on? if the goal is to get as many cars as possible to get track rates down per driver then i say lets view all options. Also if its a track day maybe other Ford cars like antique racers. I'll bet there are a few old Mustang's and Fairlane's out there set up for the tack that might like to join us? Mercuries? Capri's, Marauders? Cyclones? Just saying We can be the hosts they help make it a great day.

Maybe a thursday? and also there are plenty of events in the Finger lakes area we could tie into if we needed to use another date. Not trying to take anything away from the Phelps people who have very generous!!! there are bigger towns with Bigger facitilies as well. Watkins glen , Geneva and even Canandaigua have hotels, parking lots and more to hold all kinds of events.
Finally as a suggestion instead of a burn out what a about a time trial course. Everyone can participate and its just the driver againsts the clock on a layed out course in a parking lot at a high school or some other large paved areas That would be fun! They do one the Watkins glen during the Grand prix and its a kick to watch! Count me in to be here more often. and i hope to help with whatever we decide to do.

The Rally has always been open to all Fords but the focus has been kept on Mustangs and I really think it should be kept that way. I would rather work a little harder on sponsorship and maybe have a lower turnout then to push getting a lot of non-Mustang cars in. I've seen our local Mustang club do this and have pretty much ruined both their shows. Used to be pretty much all Mustangs then they felt they didn't have enough cars so tried to get a lot more Fords in. Changed the awards to a top 40. Well, when you start getting into non Mustang Fords, you get a lot of classics and guess who those people vote for? The classic Mustangs! They take the majority of the awards and now I've noticed a drop-off of Mustangs showing up. Then they decided to ruin their even bigger show by allowing NON-FORD cars in! At a Ford dealer no less! Talk about ruining a show. Not saying this would happen, but one thing leads to another. I know there are not many Mustang only events out there and if this event turns into another all Ford/all make show, no thanks I'll stay home and attend the shows here that have done that.

I totally agree with dawn. Keep it mustangs. I don't think the name of the club is new York Mustangs/Focus n' Buicks. I dont think a burnout contest is a good idea. A half day at the track like Jen mentioned is a great idea. 3 or 4 hrs at the track I think would be ideal, plus prolly cheaper as well. Good idea Jen
Keep it a Mustang only show.Renting the track is a great idea.I'm in.I liked what the mayor of Phelps said about trying to rival Sturgis but Phelps just doesn't have the amenities .No hotels,bars ,etc.Canadaigua is a really cool town thou with much more going for it.To tell you the truth you wouldn't have known Phelps was having a festival.We had to ask where it was.Not many festivals goers came to the show either.Wish we had more than one get together a year.is anyone going to the vintage races at the Glen?
Damn, im gone for a day and i come back to this, alot of nice idea's have been put out there. A burnout contest is fun and cool to watch, but how many people besides myself have the extra rims and tires to have fun with? I always have leftover drag radials that are not track worthy but i could have some fun with. I like Jen's idea with the 3-4 hour track rental, what about keeping it like it is, except making Friday Watkins Glen day, 3-4 hour track rental, hang out, maybe do a lunch, kinda like a spend the day at the track kinda thing? Then use Phelps as the car show, i think we need to have more advertising, when local's even tell you they knew nothing about it, there is something wrong. We need to get out to the media, newspapers, tv, both local and regional magizines to get the word out and it has to start around February/March so people can plan for it. You see all the major shows in all the national mag's months in advance. WE NEED TO GET THE WORD OUT ON THIS EVENT...Plain and simple!!!!
Yes Jen you're right. i guess i was just trying to spread out the cost if we can't get enough cars. But i agree I like the fact that this is all mustangs. Its one of the few places people know what my turbo is all about. LOL! Half a day sounds interesting. Can we look into that Dawn?
I still think time trials would be fun. It evens out the big horsepower cars with the smaller stuff and everybody can drive it. I'm keepin that out there.
