Depends on what wax you use. If it's a traditional carnauba wax it will probably leave some white streaks on the paint. If it's one of the new synthetic sealant waxes it may just leave some dark streaks in the paint. If you have a car that's painted with flat take Mike65's advice and never wax...

As far as I know all you would have to do to take them apart is heat up the glue in between the housing and lens and you should be able to separate them with a little bit of prying. Here's a guide that some made for a Chrysler 300 but it should be the same process for all vehicles...
