What clutch and throwout bearing is in there? Also do you have OEM clutch cable or aftermarket?

If they just said that without doing any tests I would certainly get a second opinion, get a compression test, if the compression in each cylinder is more than 15% difference there's certainly an internal problem. Hopefully it's only an exhaust leak or a head tick. Even if it was a head tick...
