From reading the V1 site, it would appear the better detectors can sense the laser when it hit cars ahead of you, but who knows. I've been debating on the V1 for the directional notification mostly, but can't seem to justify it with myself when I may be able to get close to the same...

Possibly a bad tensioner. On initial start up it may be "stuck" then the belts motion frees it. So when you first start it the belt has some play, hence the squeak. Remove the belt and work the tensioner, it should move freely and spring back into position when released.
