My old 89' SSP had the same thing on both doors. I think it was just sloppy laziness at the factory. I wouldn't change a thing. I think it adds to the character to the car.

98 heads are the "B" heads which have split intake ports- I would use the 96-98 cobra intake with delete plates. There is no other modular intake that works with those heads, other than the mark VIII intake, which you don't want to use. If you have the money- Use an MMR B head sheet metal...
