Straight Pipes Vs. Full After Market Exhaust

What is better or what do you like better, full aftermarket exhaust system or straight pipes and stock h with cats, what's better for performance

Performance would be open headers. But to be somewhat legal, do an off road X with a cat back, non cambered muffler.

That's what i currently have, It sounds amazing, i get complements everywhere i go

But there's def gotta be benefits, no restriction on the catback has to be some sort of power increase

I'm running shorty headers, a Pypes catless x pipe and a Borla exhaust and the car gets tons of compliments. It cruises at 70 around 2100rpm and sounds perfect.

If you want LOUD get what I have on my 98 GT..offroad X-pipe with SLP LM1 catback lol. It's insanely race car loud though I'm getting a catted x ASAP.

Price no object....Borla...Bassani...Maggies...

You needed back pressure on the old carb motors but not on the fuel injected cars. The more material that is there the more power you lose.

Nothing "needs" back pressure it is more less about exhaust velocity and scavenging. Carbed motors are not any different than EFI with there needs for better exhaust though.

You can, and will lose HP/Torque with the wrong setup with exhaust. Not having cats/mufflers you may pick up peak HP #'s, but across the board you might lose some, and torque will typically go down as well. More often than not its not worth gaining 5 peak HP, when you lose 10-15 in certain rpm ranges.

Typically on a stock/ish 2V youre best bet is going to be a catless mid pipe, with a muffler setup like MAC's, Borla, Bassani etc.

I heard from a buddy of mine it had something to do with the carb motors and tuning. But after a little research I guess he was wrong and I look like a jackass.

Back pressure isnt ALWAYS bad. In a FI application, yeah, but with an N/A setup a little bit of BP will make more torque typically.

What about them? What kind of app are you putting them on? They are a great muffler, and sound pretty nasty!

I'm thinking about putting them on with an O/R X-pipe for now...and next year, put American Racing Longtubes with their O/R X-pipe...Will I lose any hp/tq with a freeflow muffler with that setup? I heard a freeflow muffler will yield more power then a chambered muffler...

Back pressure isnt ALWAYS bad. In a FI application, yeah, but with an N/A setup a little bit of BP will make more torque typically.

Its the vacuum created behind the gases that pull the gas out of the exhaust ports that helps to make power. Back pressure is different in that it is a measure of restriction in the system only. If you had zero restriction i.e. open headers and could keep your exhaust velocity high then that is ideal.

No you wont lose HP/Torque with that setup. You will probably gain somewhere in the 10-15hp range.

Sweet deal. As much as I love my flowmasters, I hear they take away a few hp, it's probably not noticeable....however, I'd like to squeeze out every bit of power I can, N/A....w/o touching the heads & cam. From all the research I've done, the packs + the O/R X-pipe come pretty damn close to the flowmaster, muscle car sound....except louder. lol

I've ran Flowmasters and MAC and never dynoed them but always have gotten great 1/4 times so I don't think it is that huge of a deal.
