I tried using a shorter antenna, but the signal went out the window, at least 60% of it, so I decided to throw both antenna's in the trash so I don't use one anymore car looks so much better without it.
You can pull the ball off of the top of the stock antenna, cut and file it, and glue to ball back on. I am sure the reception must get worse but it does work. Otherwise, you can buy a shorty antenna from american muscle for $20.

That's what I did (cut the factory one and moved the ball). The reception isn't as good but NY radio stations suck anyway and if I'm not listening to the exhaust I'll throw on a CD
I hear you on that. I used to have XM in the Mustang but never really listened to it. I stick to Pandora or my iPod now When K-Rock went pop I lost all hope in NY stations
I hear you on the look of the OEM antenna but I got the short antenna from americamuscle used it for about a month before i switched back. I kept getting static on all the stations i normally listen to. if you have XM then its not an issue. but not worth the change if you listen to the radio regularly
