I do like gear drives, just not the dog bone ones. If you really want one spend the money and get the Milodon gear drive. They are expensive but you get what you pay for. The block will have to be machines for it as well. Had one in an old motor and loved it. I have a Danny Bee belt drive now.

I believe that you can't use them with fuel injected applications because of the noise with the gear drives, it can interfere with the knock sensor and it will retard the timing because it will think the engine is detonating.

Your on a budget, and a GOOD gear drive is not going to fit into that equation. That $100+ you save going with a chain can be better spent elsewhere.

I looked up how much a Milodon gear drive was...yup, FRPP timing chain it is. LOL. I forget if I asked here but the crank that came in the motor has some pretty bad grooves on it. I have a crank out of a 79, but it's weighted differently and has a lip in the back(maybe that has something to do with it being a 2 piece rear main seal?). I'm not sure if I should have the 86 crank machined and run oversized bearings, or can I use the older crank as long as I run a matching balancer and flywheel?

If the crank has really bad grooves chances are it's junk. You can only turn them so far.

The cost of rebalancing it would be more than a new crank. I'm not sure if the crank will accept a 1 piece seal either. It may, just not sure.

That was the best price I could find for something that seemed legit. Usually they are $250+ with bearings aren't they? Been along time since I bought one.

Yeah you can usually buy a good 5.0 core for the price of a new crank. I have a good shortblock but I'm gonna use it to build a new engine for my wife's SN95. Otherwise I would have offered it up.

I have a complete good '90 motor but he said he didn't want to spend that much LOL. I might just keep it since I know it runs 100$ and is original from oil pan to the plug wires LOL.
