After posting this, I spent another hour or so googling (and posted on another forum as well), found little, but what you said seems to be the case.
With 71 & up, each end was a different spline count so it only goes in only one way; I suspect that is why most places don't bother talking about this specifically.
I did find people saying they changed to 26/24 after 70 because the assembly workers put those in backwards.
The 64-69 was 24 on both ends, and my 64 Ford Shop Manual doesn't say which way to put it in. I'm wondering if the 64-69 has the same length splines on each end, so that is why it isn't mentioned.
