Timing (hopefully) Question

Afternoon folks....I have the 86 GT (Pictured), stock 302/5Spd. The thing really does not want to start when hot. I thought maybe it was warming and most parts were stock so I went ahead and replaced:

- Water pump
- Thermostat
- Fan
- Fan Clutch
- Starter

Running MUCH cooler now, so that's nice. However, didn't do squat. Next on my list was timing. I've found 400 opinions on what the should be....right now its:

- 10 ATDC w/the spout off
- mid 20s w/spout on

Runs terrific while running

If that is right, then where should I look next? or is it wrong?

Is the car throwing any codes (check engine light)? It could be a few things, but the first thing that came to mind (assuming that timing was set properly) is the coolant temperature sensor.

I looked at what I typed, and yeah....runs great at 10 degrees ATDC....the balancer has been replaced (not by me), and I just set it to 10 BTDC (w/Spout off) like the rest of the world, and it did fire, but dies.

put #1 cyl. at TDC and check your timing marks. if there off there's your problem.

Ok....everything lines up...now, idle was crap, so I bumped it up a hair so it would run, took it for a quick, come back, same sypmtom

Found what I consider to be some systemic deficiencies....going to do a full tune-up, then try again

could be a few things, if it cranks but no start after a good heat cycle then the common things would be tfi module, fuel pump or inj. no real way to check tfi module, for pump you can check fuel press but doesnt always tell you anything, and be sure theres a full tank of gas in it not half a tank as a bad pump will not get as hot in a full tank and as for inj. they can get heat soak but it doesnt happen often. those are the common pita probs, the more basic would be timing which should be set at 13 btdc, checking for leaks of any sort be it vac or otherwise and of course a good tune up. being a SD car theyre sensitive to everything but dont throw codes much.
