This was a busy year for the Ford Mustang. There was plenty of news straight from the Blue Oval, like the redesigned
2013 Mustang hitting dealerships and info on the
2014 Mustang being released, and the aftermarket came out in force with their various iterations from
Vaughn Gittin Jr’s Mustang RTR to
Roush’s updated Stage 3 Mustang. There were some cool one-off Mustangs introduced as well, like the
Red Tails Mustang that was auctioned off for charity or the
twin-turbo Mustang Cobra Jet Concept revealed by Ford Racing at SEMA. Then, of course, there are the multitude of rumors regarding the 2015 Mustang.
So what were the

10. No more Boss 302 for 2014
In November Ford released the order guides for the
2014 Mustang, revealing that there would be no more
Boss 302 after 2013. This was no surprise as Ford had initially promised the Boss 302 would be limited to a 2-year run, but the order guides made it official.

At the
Los Angeles Auto Show in November
Steve Saleen announced that a legendary number would be coming back to the brand – 351.* It’s been 13 years since there has been a 351ci Mustang in the Saleen lineup, making the announcement all the more special.

Paul Brown made a splash in the Mustang world in 2011 when he dominated the GTS class of the
SCCA World Challenge, winning five races and posting nine top-five finishes on his way to the driver’s championship. Unfortunately Brown was unable to defend his title, as he was diagnosed with skin cancer in March and passed away in October.

Ford Racing stole the spotlight at this year’s
SEMA Show with the incredible Mustang Cobra Jet Concept powered by a one-off twin-turbocharged 5.0L V8. Ford Racing says that they will continue to do endurance testing with the powertrain, perhaps hinting that a production version of the engine could be a possibility.

Details of the
2015 Ford Mustang are still emerging, but you can count on one thing – an
EcoBoost engine will be an option. Early in the year Derrick Kuzak, Ford’s group vice president of global product development, confirmed that an EcoBoost engine would be a part of the next generation Mustang.

With Ford aiming to globalize every car in their lineup, it’s no surprise that the
2015 Mustang will be marketed outside the United States. Ford made it official with a video announcement in September that declared the new Mustang will be sold in Europe.

Steve Saleen and the company bearing his name were separated in 2007 when he retired from the company, although it seemed inevitable that the two would be reunited eventually. That came to fruition in April, when Steve acquired the Saleen brand and naming rights.

Shelby wowed the automotive world with the debut of the
Shelby 1000 at the
New York Auto Show in April. It’s sure to be an instant collector car – not only is it the most powerful Mustang ever built by the company, but it’s also the last to be introduced while Carroll was still alive.

The automotive world lost a legend when
Carroll Shelby passed away on May 10th at the age of 89. Carroll was most known for his automotive achievements – winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans,* developing the Shelby Cobra and numerous performance Mustangs – but he also created the Caroll Shelby Foundation to help provide medical assistance to children.
