repair question

Hi All, while not new to the forum, I very rarely post, but use the info constantly. I have a 1967 convertible, 289. I need to replace the timing chain cover gasket (developed a water leak). I have been doing some research, but am not clear if the oil pan has to be removed. I know there are some bolts into the cover, but will the gasket and cover go back w/o lowering the pan?

The oil pan doesnt necessarly need to come off. I have done the timing cover gasket on a 302 with out removing the oil pan. Just take IIRC 4 bolts that go through the oil pan into the timing cover out & remove the timing cover bolts & the timing cover should come off. In fact I thought that the timing cover gasket kits used to come with the front curved sections of the oil pan gasket.

Thanks for the timely response Mike. You're correct about the gasket kit...there's the curved rubber-like gasket along with the main gasket, crank gasket and two small triangular gaskets. finishing it up once I get the puller. Andy
