Hey all,
I was looking for some input on intakes. I have a bone stock 90 GT vert. A BBK CAI is the only thing done. I would like to change my Upper and lower intake and have been looking at the obvious choices. GT40, Cobra and others like Trick Flow. The Trick Flow is a bit out of my budget range and was wondering with a new throttle body and mass air filter(maybe 75-80MM) and either the GT40 or cobra what type of gains am I looking at?

Want to try to get some decent gain for a decent price.

Any input is greatly appreciated.

whats the goals for the car?
any of those 3 you would find a small gain.
for the same $ gears would yield you better ET's tho

I have tried all kinds of cold air setups, stock airbox with drop in K&N was the best on my car (track time verified). Like The Bone said gears is the best bang for the $$. On a stock motor 65mm or 70mm is fine, neither is going to be a huge gain even with an intake. You might gain 15hp with the intake and tb. The MAF is maybe 5h-10hp, most of the gain with a MAF is due to the leaner A/F vs. stock. Don't mess with getting a adjustable fuel pressure regulator either.

Timing set to 14 degrees? Do you have pulleys? I gained around .1-.15 from those in 1/4. Whats the exhaust setup?

And you said above you had a bone stock car, so I'm sure The Bone was thinking it has zero mods as was I....

Yeah engine is pretty much stock except for the BBK CAI. Have Ford Racing 3.73 gears, have shorty headers, have flowmaster muffs. Suspension has steeda springs and KYB shocks, also have full length subframe connectors. It's an auto and I've heard the pullies aren't the best for autos.

So sounds like with an intake, mass, and throttle I would see about a 20-25 HP gain?

Under drive pulleys do not work so well with the stock alternator, some people's cars are fine with a stock alternator and U/D pulleys but most of the time, it is best to upgrade to the 3g alt and then get the pulleys.

May I also suggest getting rid of the stock crank driven fan, and putting in an electric fan? This will give you a bit more power, since there will be less parasitic loss. But again, if you go with the e-fan, I suggest upgrading the alternator. I didn't look to see where you are from, but if you don't have any problems with emissions, maybe you could get an o/r x- pipe or the o/r h-pipe.

I have never had issues with underdrives, just don't run the alternator underdrive. Use the water pump and crank pulley but keep the stock alternator. Did this on multiple cars of mine and friends over the years since 90's and never an issue. The one car I did have alternator issues was a dead stock car haha.

I have had a few AOD cars. A good valve body or shift kit would be one of the 1st mods I'd do to one personally. I started out with underdrives and a drop in filter ran 14.90@94 with my 93 GT. It had stock 3.27 gears. Then full exhaust, 14.84@95. Then OD went so I did a T-5 swap. After that I ran a best of a 13.80@100 and a best trap speed of 103. Still stock 3.27 gears. Next I added a Powerdyne and ran 12.77@111. Still stock gears and untouched motor. Car weighed around 3500lbs had a custom stereo system with 2 12" JL's.

If you are on a budget just get an Explorer intake, 65mm tb, and for a MAF you can run a 94/95 3.8 or 5.0 70mm which is a direct bolt in. I used a 70mm 93 Cobra meter years ago but it tends to make the car run a little lean, I personally had no issues but the SN95 5.0 meter is a better idea.

Actually, the 2 BEST mods you will really feel would be a valvebody and a torque converter.
