i heard for every mod you do cam,exhaust,t/b,etc you should tune your computer and store your tune this way your computer reads these mods and gives the their full potential if you dont its still reading as if you were running factory parts i have a 90 and i want to do this as well if its true

My car still has the stock computer and its currently got a different motor (347) with h/c/i/exhaust, a different throttle body, cai, different transmission (had an auto, now a t5) and a bunch of other stuff done and it runs fine.

Ive never had the computer tuned and dont plan on getting it done.

Well the stock PCM when in closed loop can correct up to a max of 25%, either adding fuel or pulling it. So minor changes are not a huge deal. The thing is when you make changes like adding more fuel via a fuel pressure regulator the EEC-IV pcm will eventually negate the changes made due to the adaptive. I am not the best at explaining this stuff so maybe I am better off linking to some inf on it. Basically say you add some fuel pressure to richen the car up, eventually the computer will pull fuel to get back to where it should be. In order to clear the adaptive you have to reset the battery. With a tune via a chip you turn adaptive off or set it so it does not effect WOT.

The stock PCM will make changes based off feedback from the sensors, but when you make drastic changes it can be too much for it to handle properly. You really don't want large fuel trims, whether positive or negative around 5% or less is normal.

So basically, small changes really are not a huge deal. With a camshaft you can gain more power and much better driveability with a tune.

I'm willing to bet it could run better though, even if you could verify the A/F. Usually with a foxbody you can get good performance without a tune but it all depends on the combo. I tuned a 90 GT with a 311 h/c/i and it was off enough it picked up quite a bit of power and drives much better.

You don't really need that right now and if you plan on getting more mods like heads you will want to do it again anyways. I can save you some $$$ PM me.

that definition sums it up... the stock ecm wasnt even optimal for performance with a stock engine

Nope not really, it was made more or less for reliable operation from day to day use and to pass emissions.

after every small mod retune? no not really needed

if u change a cam or heads and totally change the powerband/air flow/or something that matters then YES.....if u change a cat back no not really needed

Just fork over the cash and get a stand alone engine management system like the Anderson PMS. :D

I have that in the 95 and it's great, lots of features.

My car had one, it has it's good and bad. I liked the one in my car for the track but on the street it is a pain. Because adaptive still tries to adjust fueling at part throttle, and applies those changes to WOT as well. In a tune via a chip you can change this. Now many guys just run all the time with no o2 sensors which forces full time OL , which is not the best for fuel mileage but will work at the track. Everyone method of tuning has its good and bad points. The PMS is nice that you can make real time changes and view sensor data without a laptop.

maby look into the tweecer to tune ur car,,my engine is stock and i definetly felt a diference in the tune,downfall is u need the knowledge to do,but if u know about engines id recomend it,,a tune could only mean 2-3 horses but on worked engines could result in a lot more.,plus it also has a datalogger so u can record ur drives or quartermile runs an see problem areas, 1 good thing is i can do it myself and not pay anyone else to do it
