Curious AC problem

Hey NYMers,
I was wondering if anyone can help me with an AC problem I noticed over the weekend.
I ran my AC on max for awhile only to find out that it wasn't getting cold, so I opened the hood and noticed that the AC pulley was engaging the AC then disengaging it every couple of seconds. The high pressure line was ice cold but the low pressure line was hot as hell.
I attached a pressure gauge to the port and noticed that when the pulley was engaging the AC and running on the belt, the pressure was normal, but when the pulley clicked and moved back to disengage the AC, the pressure dropped to zero.

Can anyone diagnose this for me?

check electrical connector to the compressor. Make sure that it is not loose or corroded. If that checks out, the AC compressor clutch might be on its way out

x2, when the system gets low it short cycles and cuts in and out, pressure on the low side should be about 30 somewhere in that area depending on outside air temp. (Heat load etc.) and despite what anyone tells you if the system is low you have a leak somewhere may not be large enough to make it easy to find but there is a leak. :awesomework:

Hey thanks for the input.
I initially thought it was simply a leak so I bought the recharge can but didn't add any because I saw that it was reading normal when the compressor was on for those few seconds. Also is it negligible that the high pressure line was ice cold and may mean I still have refrigerant in there?

probably have you gauges crossed as far as pressure readings. high side should be between 110-175 lbs depending on ambient air temps going thru condenser coil (radiator). suction/low side should be between 35- 45 lbs again depending on ambient temps WITH A/C RUNNING ON MAX.
Best way to make sure you have correct refrigerant charge is to recover refrigerant in system, EVACUATE SYSTEM WITH A VACUME PUMP then weigh a new refrigerant charge according to the info on the car a/c.

bring your car up to saratoga & ill do it for ya.

That goes for any body that wants their a/c system leak checked and/or topped off. No charge for labor, just pay for the 134A refrigerant.
