The last fifty years have brought many changes into our culture, and not surprisingly, the colors people choose for their cars has changed as well. Perhaps no other car exemplifies this as much as the Ford Mustang, having been in continuous production for the last five decades. Ford just released some interesting facts about the history of Mustang colors, and you may find some of the trends interesting.
Not so surprising, red has consistently been the most popular throughout the five decades that the Mustang has been sold and still remains the top color overall at almost 21%.** Although Ford has offered a wide variety of vibrant colors, black and red still remain the most popular colors today.
White is still the best-selling color for vehicles overall, but Mustang breaks the trend with only 10% being ordered in white today.* Black is currently the most popular color being sold in the Mustang with 28% of the 2013 models being sold.* That’s quite a change from the late 60’s and early 70’s when only 1.5% ordered black according to historical data provided by Marti Auto Works (licensed supplier of Ford Motor Company production numbers, 2013).
Blue has always been a very popular color of Mustang and maybe that’s thanks to some of the more recent eye-popping offerings by Ford like Grabber Blue and Kona Blue.* Maybe these cool blues are the reason for a comeback of the number of blue Mustangs sold at 23% in recent years.* In 1968 they offered six different shades of blue and it accounted for 30% of all cars purchased.
Interestingly, early favorites like green, yellow, and brown have faded away in the 21st century, but green and yellow have been featured on special editions like the Bullitt and Boss 302 Mustangs.* Additional unique colors were highlighted like Playboy Pink in 1967, the color-shifting Mystichrome on the 2004 SVT Cobra, and today’s Gotta Have It Green.* Mustang marketed itself in the early days as “the car designed to be designed by you” and Ford did that by offering customers the opportunity to pick colors, packages, and special editions to make their car represent who they are.
“Our Mustang owners are passionate about their cars, and the exterior paint color they choose invokes an emotional response to the vehicle” said Melanie Banker, Ford Mustang marketing manager.* “Mustang owners buy a vehicle in School Bus Yellow or Grabber Blue because it reflects what they want their Mustang to say to the world about them”.
Some of these colors that adorn the surface of Mustangs can even define the club they belong to like the Yellow Mustang Registry that is dedicated to the owners and enthusiasts of yellow Mustangs.* This registry founded in 2001 has more than 8,900 members and approximately 8,984 registered vehicles worldwide.* Not to be left out, red Mustangs are represented by AllRedMustangs.com who cater to “Ford Mustangs 1964-present – as long as it’s red”.* They have more than 1,300 members in 14 countries.* “Your car is an extension of you and embraces your personality” says Steve Schattem, president and owner of AllRedMustangs.com
