OK Kiddies ... The Cougar is away getting her coat "groomed" and my other car doesn't think I should get lazy!!
Background story: I bought the 07 Mustang the day after my Cougar was shipped off to get painted. about a week maybe 2 later I noticed what I thought was a slight slip in 5th gear usually when I was getting on the highway in the AM and only once in a while. I took it to the dealer I bought it off of and it wouldn't replicate the symptom. They told me if it shows up to bring it in. Well i didnt show up until way after the warranty period was up and now is real bad.
SO .... time to replace the clutch and since I will have the trans out I might as well replace the shifter.
Rock auto is my friend ... I bought an entire clutch kit for about $100 LESS than anywhere else ... it is a Rhino pack Clutch kit which doesnt sound as sexy as the Spec or the Ram BUT I dont have 450 HP to mess around with either.
the Shifter ... I did not skimp here!! After driving IrishBullitt's car I decided that I need to look into buying an MGW ... It just felt SOLID !! The only problem is that they seemed WAY expensive ... After researching and researching and either coming up empty everwhere else or finding something that MAY work, or finding stuff that just seemed to be overpriced (cough AM cough) I decided to buy the MGW!
OK well I will be doing this Tomorrow with the help of Auto Saloon mogul Kyle J B!! (THANK YOU THANK YOU !!) ... hopefully THIS time it wont take 15 hours :nervous:
CRAP ... sorry I missed the emails I may have actually been in bed before that one Matt LOL.
I got to Kyles about 830 ... and was off to a slow start ... we needed to make room for me and Kyle had a car he had to work on. At about 9-ish we had the cars in the garage an I started to drop the drive shaft. Before I got the drive shaft all the way out we took a break to go to Metro to get some of the bolts I needed (that I had to order), got something to drink at Stewarts and went to Parts America to look for something to mark the drive shaft (to put it back in in the right position) ... got back to Kyles and finished removing the drive shaft ... so basically I got a start on the job around 1030 or 11 ROFL.
The transmission removal went smooth with one little snag we got it hung up a little on one of the O2 sensors ... once we removed the O2s the rest went easy. I think it was out around 1. My clutch plate was TOAST LOL. The rivets were making contact on the pressure plate side (wonder if THAT was why it was slipping ). I removed the T.O. bearing cleaned out the bell housing installed the new T.O. and went to start the flywheel removal ... it had 6 point star headed bolts, which we didnt have tools for. Back out to the Zone ... siiiigh.
Ok after the Zone and lunch, we were back at it. Took off the flywheel and my pilot bearing is actually installed in the flywheel ... that was replaced in like 3 mins ... the flywheel didnt look bad but since it was out I wanted to see if I could get it machined ... NO machine shops open at 3 on a Saturday.
Oh well like I said it wasnt bad so ... flywheel back on, new clutch and pressure plate installed. The trans went back in place pretty easy with only a few "choice" words. I got most of the bolts back in (except the top 2 which I needed help with) and THAT is when I realized that I am NOT 25 any more LOL .
My car was back together by 930 or 10 (I think). The shifter install was cake the drive shaft went back in with no worries. We bled the system and done. Kyle was working on getting that other car done and there were a boat load of cars in his drive way so the test drive was on hold. (PLUS we were arguing about Dynomat ...and I STILL think it;s stoopit KYLE LOL)
1030 OK move the cars, back my stang out, go to take off and the little wrench of DEATH light lit up GAAH ... so we figured that it was the O2 that we got hung up on. (BTW does anyone else think there should be 24 hour parts stores). the car was otherwise OK ... so I limped her home in fail safe mode at 1AM.
OK time for a flash back here ... while removing the transmission bolts on the top we took out one bolt that was not in the trans. we put it back finger tight and decided to tighten it while the trans was out ... and proceeded to forget about it.
Sunday -- I get to kyles at like 1030 we finish the car he had to work on and start trying to figure out my car. I put in a new O2 go to take it out and pop Wrench of DEATH ... DAMMIT WTF ... attached the code reader again and the entire O2 "network" and EGR System are coding ... ... hmmm I know lemme check the fuses !! I found a fuse under the hood that was blown and labeled Engine #1 in the owners manual. I replaced it started the car shut it down checked the fuse and it was blown ... ... OK I must've pinched a wire or something. I searched the wiring harness around the trans and everything was good. At that point Kyle got back from delivering the car he worked on and I mentioned the fuse ... (light bulb flickered on above Kyles head) We never tightened that bolt ... problem solved !!! YAY Pictures will follow tomorrow.
The Clutch feels great and that shifter is SOLID !!!
