I want to know all the details of what type of transmission I will need to install to modify my mustang from a automatic Transmission to a Manual Transmission. For instance, I went to the American Muscle website, and I found that they only have a GT manual transmission that they (AM) recommends to install in the V6, once I provide the nomenclature of the GT transmission that they recommend can anyone tell me if this type of transmission is correct for my type of Engine.
My mustang specs:
2014 Mustang Convertible V6 3.7L
GT Manual Transmission Specs:
AM item#: 348604
Name: Ford Performance TREMEC Magnum XL T56 6-Speed Transmission (05-14 GT)
What I am trying to understand whether this manual GT transmission would be appropriate for my 3.7L V6 Engine, since I know GT engines are usual 5.0+L in size.
The Magnum XL is going to be overkill for the 3.7 in all honesty and way expensive. It is mostly designed for GT's that are looking for a stronger and better designed transmission. In all honesty, pulling a MT-82 out of a GT or looking for someone who is auto swapping and changing over the transmission would be the best thing to do. I know everyone says the MT-82 is shit, but I haven't had much if any issues with mine.
While you are there you might as well address the driveshaft and throw in a MGW shifter or a Barton Hybrid 3 shifter as well. The swap isnt as straight forward as dropping the auto and throwing in the manual. IIRC from the 5.0's swapping to Auto's there was a PCM change that was needed or something to that effect. It might be worth looking into further on what would be needed as most people I have seen go from manuals to autos.
If I remember the MT-82 was in both the V6 and GT so should help with fitment. Maybe try Ebay or if you have access to a salvage yard you can grab a good low mile one. Although not a Mustang but it a good overview in general of an auto to manual swap look into Mighty Car Mods' SuperGramps build.
