Introduced for 2015, the S550 Ford Mustang in production today is the first in the pony car’s long history to feature an independent-rear suspension from the factory (save for 1999-2004 SVT Cobra models). That led to an increase in curb weight, impairing to some extent the car’s ability to compete with the sixth-generation Chevrolet Camaro, which launched a year later. We suspect that this performance gap might be partly to thank for Ford’s decision to revamp the model after only three years, for 2018.
Performance-aiding improvements for the updated S550 Mustang include a lower, sleeker hood, a new dual-injected 5.0L V8 for the flagship GT model, and enhanced Performance Packs for both the GT and EcoBoost models featuring magnetorheological dampers. And hey, if all that doesn’t do it, Ford can try again with an all-new Mustang in 2021."
