you don't have to on an '87+.. should be the same on yours. i changed the one on my '88 cause it was cracked, if you're just repainting why don't you do it on the car

No you don't, because anything related to the A/C is in the heater box which is separate from the dash. You have to take the screws out along the top of the dash( at the bottom of the windshield) and the two bolts at the bottom corners. Plus you obviously have to remove the consul.

Sweet sounds like an easy job. Do I have to lower the steering column at all?

I don't know how the 86 and older dashes are to take out, but the 87-93 dashes require some time to get them out. Nothing really too hard about it other than bagging and tagging all of the screws you take out so you know where they go back. The 87-93 also use a lot of Torx screws, but again, I'm not sure about the 86 and older. I had to take the dash out to change the heater core, and you should think about doing that too while you're there, unless you blocked off the heater. For mine I had to take the shifter out, center console, drop the steering wheel, hvac controls out, glove box door off, gauges out (speedo gear isn't long enough to leave the gauges in), the gauge pod with the head light switches, and a load of screws had to be taken out, lol.

Yes, you will need to evacuate the a/c lines to change the heater core.
