I was thinking of picking up a MSD pro billet distributor to replace my aging stock one. Anyone using one of these? How do you like it? Its a toss up between the MSD and the Summit brand one.
I used to have one and never had a problem with it, but there are no performance gains with it, so if I were you, I would just get a stock replacement.
Waste of $$. It's a great part... but unless someone is spinning a motor to like 9,000 rpm theres no point to it. Get a stock replacement, or if you really want an aftermarket dizzy... check out procomp.
Yeah, I dont spin the motor that high (6k the most) but I have about 150k miles on my stocker and it is starting to get some play in it. Pro-Comp? Where can I find them?
If youve got an ignition box you can unhook it and just power the distributor w/ the coil. I forget exactly how your supposed to do it. If you want to keep the ignition box you have to 're wire' the thing. aka just unplug the wires for the module and put the wires for the box in the dizzy.
If the distributor is for an injection car then the Procomp won't work. I did run a Procomp in a stock carb engine and it worked fine. It's hard to beat a stock Ford distributor, just get a rebuilt one.
theres always power to be gained in an aftermarket dist. if you know what youre doing, you have to know about timing curves . that being said, the msd dist. has been know to have problems with the pick ups and although its a cheap part you may not want to deal with it if it arises. I personally have only had 1 go bad in 15 years so the problems may be from user error but who knows.
I never had a problem with MSD distributors. I have one in my car and have had them in previous cars. Ive noticed far better throttle response with them too.
I bought my MSD used, and have never looked back. Its been great to me, and beats replacing the stock disti every 1-2 years. I spanked 3 of the stock ones, and this has held up for about 3 years now. So im impressed.
