Default Re: Mike's 302 to 351W Swap.

Ok, just some thinking:

The plan was to hone the cylinders out on this unit and do a complete rebuild. But with my current student income that is not going to happen at this time.

On to option 2, replace some seals, give the engine a good look over and slap it in my car stone stock, or close to it. Now im having second thoughts about adding a cam to this engine while its out for some more horsepower. I have been talking to a good friend and he has reccomended a cam for me. One of Comp Cams Xtreme Energy cams. I think thats what im going to do, a cam some refreshing of seals and run it.

Here is where i have no experience in. I have ripped into a Diesel engine, but it was a very simple one and just a refresh, so no changing of valvetrain geometry. I want to buy a roller camshaft (which the XE is availible in) to change this engine over to a roller tappet. So im going to need the roller cam, new roller lifters and new pushrods. I think.... The rockers will stay flat tappet for now until aluminum heads are in budget.

I will also need to buy a degree wheel and dial indicator kit to correctly degree in this new cam. Does anyone know of any through instructional vidoes of how to do this? I will also be doing this with "heads on" as i dont want to break the seal there right now.

All i have to do now is to remove the timing cover, then its ready for stock cam removal, then replacement. Sorry for all the new questions but this is alien stuff to me.

So, opinions please, what color should i paint the block and heads?

351w swap pan kit, roller lifters and the XE cam. WOOT!

Also picked up some wire wheels for the drill to clean the engine up. A can of grey engine primer, and a can of Ford Grey engine enamel. Hopefully will get back to work on it the end of this week.

Ended up sending the comp cam back to summit. I got some good infor from Doug (64Fatblock) and id need new heads, and pistons with that much lift. So we are now going with the TFS-stage 1 cam. Ordered the gt-40 head spring kit, cam, shim kit and cloyes double roller timing setup. Should all be here Friday or Monday.

I wont need them because this is a 94 block, so it is a roller ready block, no need for the retrofit kits. If it was 93 and older i would!

Im still making progress. Its been slow, wire wheeled the entire block last weekend, got the major scale off of it. Then i ripped the intake off. Masked the engine for paint. Got two coats of primer on it and one top coat last night. One more coat of paint then the pan swap kit will get installed. Ill try and get a pic on the next paint, maybe ill run home at lunch or something to get outta here for a bit.

All of the go fast parts are ordered, i physically have everything except for the flywheel and swap shortys (in the mail now). I wont start tearing into the car until this engine is just about ready to drop in, just in case we get some nice days, then i can still drive it.

Might have to set up a time with doug so i can get all the valvetrain gemoetry correct for the tfs-1 cam and springs.

Here are two quick pictures i snapped this am. Basically the block is all painted. Got to rip off all my masking tape on it next and clean up some overspray i got on the crank. I will be using the old 302 aluminum valve covers so thats why i am using the steelies for a masking template. Also used the old oil pan as a masking template, will install the new pan as soon as i pick up an oil pump and gasket. BBK headers came today!

I more need dougs help with adjusting/shimming the rockers, replacing the stock valve springs, figuring out pushrod length and that kind of stuff, that ive never done before.
