Thanks! Will keep plugging away at it, was really hope-ing to make it to Watkins Glen. Found out last night my G/F has to work, and without her the axle wouldn't have been installed so quick, and the car wouldn't be insured and on the road. So we will see. Wish i could get started on the 351, but i dont have a dime for it currently. My taxes got messed up (guy who files are taxes accidently didnt write me as claiming myself, when i wanted too.

I just put a 351 stroker in my 95 GT. Pretty easy swap, bought BBK shortys made for the swap and the exhaust bolted right up. If you run into trouble send me a message, maybe I had the same issue. I had some help from some of the guys and it worked out well. (No replacement for displacement)

Back at it again. Just pulled the 351w out of the corner of the basement. Got the block code, pic included below of the number. I also found number on the heads. Im guessing GT and then 22 on the opposite corner.

Does anyone know if i can re-use the harmonic balancer and flywheel in my car since they will be the correct balance for the engine?

Plan for this:
I find my self still in college (going to ESF), and cant afford to rebuild the engine, so it will be a refresher of seals and maybe a cam of mild sorts at the most before dropping it in my car. My 302 is very tired, but still running. Want to be able to make it to Watkins Glen this spring!!!

I dont know what the balance is on a 351 out of a Lightning truck. Most 351's were 28 0z but I am not sure on your engine as it was one of the last.

Im pretty sure tha balance is 28oz on every 351w. So the truck was an automatic, im gonna have to ditch the flexplate, get my flywheel resurfaced and re-balanced from the 50oz 302 to the 28oz 351w. I think when that time come i will see what Syracuse Crank charges to do this.

I think the harmonic balancer on the engine will work. it should be the correct 28 oz imbalance. However i see some places list 28.2oz imbalances and plain 28oz. Will the .2 matter?

Going to pick up some (7/16)" x 14 pitch bolts this afternoon to mount this bad boy on the stand tonight.

Can they rebalance these flywheels? Regardless, I would have to think the cost of a new iron flywheel wouldn't be much more(possibly even less) than paying for a resurface and rebalance of an old one. I remember being quoted $50 to have mine resurfaced locally and I ended up buying a new one for just under $90.

Also, don't forget to add the pilot bearing if the motor is going from auto to manual trans.

Good luck & keep up the good work

I have the part number for the Ford racing flywheel. Its about $300, but its rated much higher and aluminum. However i was just going to get an iron one like you stated, just what my budget allows. On summit racing's website they have one but its $175 ish.

HERE:Fidanza 286280 - Fidanza Nodular Iron Flywheels - Overview - SummitRacing.com

Has anyone dealt with this brand? Its the only iron one i can find thats in the 157 tooth pattern.

Also on the pilot bearing, isnt it located on the shaft of the t-5? This is the first time i have ever taken apart anythign with a manual trans, all others have been bolt the torque converter to flexplate deals.

Thanks!

Thanks! I got more completed over the weekend, but i forgot my camera at home, so i dont have the pictures with me. Basically got it down to a long block on the engine stand. VERY happy with the undersides of the valve covers. This engine was maintained very well.

Im going to paint the block to get the surface rust covered up. Does anyone know the stock color of the 351w? Gray? My dad wants me to paint it ford blue, but i want the car to look like stock, sleeper..

Also im pondering if i want to put a cam in this thing... Just a mild one for now. Dont have the slightest clue what i want yet. I really want to convert this thing to a roller.

Does anyone know if i take the intake off this engine if i will be able to see the camshaft? Or will i need a degree wheel to install one?

Fidanza is a well known brand. I've never owned one, but I have heard nothing but good things. The flywheel I bought was a 50oz for a 302, I guess I didn't realize the price difference. You can get a 28oz 164tooth really cheap, but 157 is another story I guess. What determinces the tooth count needed anyway? Maybe somebody can chime in here

The pilot bearing is actually in the block(maybe you are thinking of the throw out bearing that is on the shaft). If you where looking at the block with the flywheel mounted, it goes in the little round spot on the block at the center of the flywheel( My description sux, so see the pic below where they are using the tool(puller) to pull out the pilot bearing)

I was actually going to ask the question of differences in flywheel tooth counts. I guess im going to see what the cost is to rebalance and resurface mine to make it like new. If its around $100 thats what i will do. Any more and i will buy the Fidanza. I will make double sure on that bearing. I brought my camera today, but wont get time to load up the pictures till later.
